New York is one of my favourite places to visit. I have been twice and this September will be my third visit. I just can’t get enough of the vibrant city and the buzz that surrounds the streets of New York. Everything from the shopping, the entertainment and attractions are just a fraction of what makes New York the exciting city that it is.
Above all else, there is no denying that food in New York and America in general is delicious. When visiting such a large city with so much to offer, it can feel like a maze when deciding where to eat with so much to choose from. That is why I have decided to make a list of some of the places I dined out at in New York to help anyone who is viting.
There are several shake shacks located around the city and each and every single one of them were packed full of customers. Don’t let the queues put you off though as the food is well worth the wait. If you are looking for quick and simple food such as a burger or hot dog, this is the place to go. There is an assortment of choices and you can add a delicious milk shake or ice cream to your order since these seem to be their speciality. Unlike most of the hot dog stands, they are slightly more expensive but the quality of the food is good and you can have a side of chips or nachos along with your burger or hot dog. I recommend the chilli cheese hot dog.
Although there are plenty of Irish bars around the city, this was definitely my favourite restaurant that we went to throughout the entire trip. There is a typical British pub atmosphere to this restaurant but the food is mostly American. I would say it is classy without the price tag. The prices are what is expected from a New York bar. Not expensive but not cheap. The clientelle is a mixture of tourists, locals and families so the menu caters to all different types. What is also nice is that the owner comes round occasionally to greet everyone and make sure they are enjoying their food. A nice added touch since you don’t normally see that in most places.
The Rum House
The Rum House is not a restaurant or a place to eat but I had to mention it as I highly recommend visiting it if you are in New York City. It has a bit of a 1920’s vibe with a piano and live singing. The music was a mixture of soul and jazz. Exactly what you would expect from a classy New York cocktail bar and classic cocktails were exactly what was on the menu. We went here on a Monday night and by 10PM it was packed full of people, proving how popular it must be. I suggest arriving early around 7PM if you want to get a seat before it starts to get busy but it’s a great experience.
Bill’s Bar & Burgers
If you are looking for typical American grub then Bill’s Bar & Burgers is the place to go. The one we went to was located in downtown New York, just a five minute walk from ground zero. I am not sure if there are more within the city but if you are passing one, I recommend giving it a try. There are different sections of the restaurant that have huge plasma t.v’s with American sports so whether you want to watch a basketball game, football or baseball, take your pick and you will get a seat situated right infront of the t.v where you can watch while you eat.
It is also worth mentioning the service we received. The staff were so friendly and couldn’t do enough to make sure that we were happy with our food. Our server took the time to ask us where we were from and he was lovely.
I will say that if you are not used to big portions then get a starter and see how you get on with that. I made the mistake of ordering nachos (above) and the loaded fries. I couldn’t finish all of it as there was so much but the food was delicious.
Lucy’s Cantina Royale
I am a huge fan of mexican food and Lucy’s Cantina Royale provides everything from burrito’s to nachos and a variety of mexican cocktails. They have reasonable prices and are located right in the heart of New York City down the road from Macy’s. What is great is that they have an outdoor patio and rooftop bar which looks over Madison Square Gardens so even if you don’t feel like eating and just want to enjoy a few drinks you can sit on their rooftop bar and enjoy the hustle and bustle down below.
I couldn’t talk about New York and not mention a steakhouse. Del Frisco’s is a luxurious steakhouse located near the Rockefeller Centre. The steak is like no other steak I have had before but expect expensive prices. We ordered 2 starters, 2 steaks, 1 side and it came to $200. If you are looking for budget food this is not the place to go but it is an experience if you are not used to luxury dining (we aren’t).
Thank You for reading my blog and please comment below if you are going to or have been to New York. Let me know if you have any suggestions on places to eat as we are going back this September.
Have a great Sunday!
Lots of Love
